Full disclosure: in my 30+ years of living in Manhattan and Brooklyn rental apartments, I have never had a doorman. Never known the joys of hassle-free deliveries, or the security of having some guy sit in the lobby all night; never known the awkwardness of forced cheeriness, or “getting busted” for late-night shenanigans.
Apartment pests: no matter how perfect your dream Manhattan or Brooklyn rental apartment, at some point during your years or decades or lifetime in this amazing city it’s likely you will have to deal with undesirable, unwanted neighbors–or, even more unfortunate, unwanted housemates–whether of the animal, insect, or human variety.
We all got a break this past “winter” in terms of heating usage–but with oil prices rising and air conditioning season right around the corner, it’s not as though the trend toward green rental properties is going away any time soon.
Will smoking in your apartment be banned in the future? Actually, in many (and increasingly more) buildings in NYC, it is already not allowed. But new legislation may force landlords to declare apartments smoking or non-smoking.
