Forget Cupcakes: Bee’s Knees Baking Company is the West Village Spot for ‘Cake-Cups’
There are plenty of places at which West Village rental apartment residents can readily feed their need for cupcakes, from mini-chains like Crumbs, Melissa’s and Magnolia to local (and, frankly, much better) spots like Butter Lane in the East Village, Billy’s in Chelsea, Babycakes and Sugar Sweet Sunshine on the Lower East Side, and Little Cupcake Bakeshop in Nolita. So cupcakes by the dozen, everywhere you look… but cake-cups? What about those?
Where can you find a delicious “piece” of cake, not in boring ol’ slice form, but served in a handy little cup, to eat now or on the go? Well my West Village rental apartment friends, you are in luck, because there is only one place in town right now slinging cake in a cup, and that place is Bee’s Knees Baked Goods, recently opened right on West 10th Street near Sixth Avenue.
The affable trio behind Bee’s Knees Baked Goods have actually been in the cake-cup business for a few years now, delighting guests at weddings and such with their creations, and apparently they still do quite a bit of catering, churning out hundreds of magical single-servings of sweet, moist, cakey goodness from their commercial kitchen on Canal Street. But Bee’s Knees Baked Goods, the actual physical shop, is a new entry into the downtown baked goodies game. And after a couple of visits to the cute, friendly little shop–complete with Gorilla coffee, asymmetrical communal table, and free WiFi–all I have to say is, welcome to the neighborhood!
The Bee’s Knees cake-cups come in a variety of flavors, starting at about five bucks a serving. You can also order a “flight” of three different mini-cups for about a dollar more, which is fun for sharing. And because the cake in a cake-cup doesn’t have to stand on its own, these Bee’s Knees desserts are able to veer into pudding territory, which is fine by me.
The Chocolate Toffee cake-cup, for example, has a thick, super-gooey vein of salted caramel between two layers of crumbled chocolate cake and roasted pecans. Unsurprisingly, this sort of thing definitely delivers all of the sweet dessert satisfaction you could possibly desire. Other flavors of cake-cups at Bee’s Knees include Honey Bourbon, which is bourbon cake laced with burnt honey cream and candied ginger, and the very good PB&J, made of yellow cake, peanut butter mousse, and strawberry cayenne jam.
Bee’s Knees Baked Goods is located on West 10th Street between Sixth and Greenwich Avenues, and is open on weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., on Fridays until 11:00, on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m., and on Sunday from 8:00 in the morning until 9:00 at night.
