Yes, it’s easy to understand why New Yorkers would be instinctively dismissive of Molecule, a water store–sorry, a water cafe–that sells, um, NYC tap water (and pretty expensive water, at that), especially considering its location in the once-gritty bohemian/hippie/punk (pick your era) enclave of the East Village.
I mean, c’mon… just drink from the tap, wouldja? But residents of East Village apartments in particular may want to pay Molecule Water Cafe a visit before decrying the end of the city as we know it.
You see, fellow New Yorkers, the folks at Molecule are dead serious about serving you “perfectly pure water.” They know what they’re doing, and, especially if you already buy drinking water for your home (from Poland Spring, say, in those big trucked-in-from-wherever water cooler containers), this may be a more environmentally-friendly, healthier, and tastier way to quench your thirst.
I stopped by the Molecule Water Cafe the other day because…. well, mostly because I’d never been to a water cafe before, and love trying new things. And turns out it there’s a lot more to Molecule than I would have thought.
Most of the space here at the Molecule Water Cafe in NYC is taken up by some large piece of purifying, reverse osmosis apparatus which I didn’t quite understand, and one whole wall is home to what I’ll call the “supplements bar”, which are various vitamins and energizers and immune boosters served via colored liquids from long glass tubes.
It’s all very cool and techie looking. And I must say, my $2.50 16-oz glass bottle, no supplements (refillable any time for just a buck! cheaper than a bodega!) was definitely an excellent glass of water, noticeably more clean, crisp, and refreshing than both tap water, which I always drink at home, and all of those shipped-from-afar plastic-bottled waters. So, who knows… maybe Molecule Water Cafe is a better idea than I and all of the mockers on the internet first thought.
Molecule Water Cafe in NYC is located on East 10th Street between First Avenue and Avenue A. The Molecule website is still being worked on, and I’m not sure of the hours, but I do know that they offer free delivery for East Village residents. Slightly more information–including the full Molecule Water Cafe menu–on their aforementioned website.
