Opponents of the NYU expansion plans have won round one. To Greenwich Village residents: the neighborhood as you know it (and, one hopes, love it) appears NOT to be heading toward complete takeover by New York University’s monstrous, multiple-building, two-MILLION-square-feet construction project, at least for the moment.
Commercial strips in primarily residential neighborhoods are often a reflection of it’s residents. Of course, in the many “up-and-coming” (e.g. gentrifying) neighborhoods you find in NYC, often the commercial businesses lag behind the actual residents (for various reasons).
Anyone who’s ever lived in or looked for a Greenwich Village apartment is well aware of New York University’s dominance in the area. So when NYU development talk heats up, people listen.
