Ghosts in the Machine, a huge new group show exploring the intersection–and, at times, collision–among humans, machines, and art, is the sort of shambling, serendipitous exhibition at which The New Museum, with its mix of soaring spaces and intimate nooks, generally excels.
Sure felt like summer last weekend, right? And not just because it was, like, 30 million degrees outside… no, I’m talking about last Saturday marking the beginning of that most fabulous of NYC summertime traditions, the always-a-blast afternoon dance party, Warm Up at MoMA PS1.
Even though it can be heavy on tourists, and light on splashy shows, I love summer at the Museum of Modern Art. You don’t have to live in a Chelsea apartment to enjoy the Chelsea gallery district; with its more than 400 art galleries packed into a half-mile stretch, this is one of the world’s great concentrations of contemporary art, featuring fantastically rich, museum-quality spaces (Gagosian) as well as plenty of scrappy, street-art-ish spots (Jonathan Levine).
