Upper West Side Foodies Favorites
Lauren, who works in our office, is a bit of a foodie, and always looking for the latest and greatest restaurants, bakeries, gourmet shops and more. She took a minute recently to tell us about some of her favorite places on the Upper West Side.
“With every visit to the Upper West Side, I fall in love with it a little more. When I visited my friend who lives on 80th and Broadway, I experienced “real estate envy” for the first time. We stopped in Zabar’s (directly across the street from my friend’s apartment–2245 Broadway) to pick up fresh scallops, pesto, cheese, and prosciutto. I also spent a good half hour browsing the kitchen appliances and gadgets on the second floor of the store before choosing a ridiculously reasonably priced 6 inch chef’s knife for $12. Quite possibly the best $12 I’ve ever spent!
After several more trips to the neighborhood, I compiled a list of my favorite foods and places: The Milstein Hall of Ocean Life at the American Museum of Natural History (Central Park West and 77th), the Chocolate Satin Cake at Cafe Lalo (201 West 83rd Street), prosciutto and freshly baked bread at Zabar’s, Trader Joe’s (Broadway and 72nd Street), Shake Shack (154 East 86th Street), and of course, dark chocolate peanut butter chip cookies at Levain Bakery (167 West 74th Street). Life really doesn’t get much better for foodies in this gold mine of a neighborhood!”
For those of you who like to bake… while the Levain Bakery does not give out it’s recipes, they do have a section on their website for people to post “copycat” recipes of their famous cookies. I may just have to fire up the oven this weekend!
Thanks Lauren, for this info… and as a Shake Shack junkie, the next time I’m uptown, I definitely will need to see how it compares to the original just outside our office, in Madison Square Park.
