There are usually plenty of low-priced NY apartments available in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bushwick, and the past decade has brought lower crime rates and a state-financed effort at revitalizing the community.

As young professionals and artists get priced out of areas such as Greenpoint and Williamsburg (and even East Williamsburg), there has been a notable increase in NY apartments put on the market in brownstones, converted warehouse lofts, limestone-brick townhouses and other renovated buildings.

Located in the northeastern section of Brooklyn, Bushwick is bounded to the northwest by East Williamsburg, to the northeast by Ridgewood, Queens, to southwest by Bedford-Stuyvesant, and to the southeast by the Cemetery of the Evergreens. The area is well serviced by public transportation, with the Myrtle Avenue/Wyckoff Avenue bus and subway hub renovated into a state-of-the-art transportation center in 2007. The L, M, J and Z trains serve residents of Buchwick.

Several small parks provide  recreation space for Bushwick residents, most notably the Bushwick Pool and Park, unsurprisingly very popular in the summer; the Bushwick Playground with basketball courts and equipment for younger children; and the Bushwick Green Park (also known as Green Central Noll Park), with its well-used baseball fields, situated on the former site of the Rheingold brewery.

Irving Square Park, renovated between 2006 and 2008, has a public plaza and garden area, as well as a playground.  The renovation added historic gates, as well as a small performance space. The central lawn was re-graded, with pear trees, evergreens and flowers added.

The BushwickBK website is a great resource for what's going on in the community. It has event calendars, maps, forums, news and more.
