The area of the West Bronx between Fordham University and the Harlem River is a section properly known as Fordham Manor.

While much of the neighborhood is made up of 4- and 5-story tenement buildings, a few blocks of the western half sports some nicely designed single-family homes, while there are a few brick rowhouses near the eastern end.

Given the abundance of large, pre-war buildings around town, it should be no issue finding a NY apartment that fits your space needs and budget. And considering this neighborhood's great accessibility to public transit, Fordham Manor apartments are good options for those who need an outer borough rental without a car.

Living In Fordham Manor

Although the borders of Fordham Manor are disputed, the general limits are Kingsbridge Rd to the north, East Fordham Road to the south, with Fordham University abutting it's eastern end. And with Grand Concourse driving straight through the neighborhood, there's fairly good access to the B & D trains. Both Fordham Rd and Kingsbridge Rd Stations provide a close, central walk to the trains. Also in the neighborhood is the number 4 train, which travels along Jerome Avenue, stopping at Kingsbridge Rd Station near the famous Kingsbridge Armory. This beautiful landmark is hard to miss--a three block long armory with some wonderfully distinct Romanesque styling.

Fordham Manor: Everything Around Town

While most of this neighborhood is residential, there are a few chunks taken out of the grid. James J. Peters VA Medical Center sets near the river on the west side of town, while Saint James Park is smack dab in the center. And perhaps the most interesting attraction in Fordham Manor is the Edgar Allan Poe Cottage, on Kings Bridge Road at the Grand Concourse. This 1812 cottage was where the famed poet lived out his final three years, until his death in 1849.

When it comes to shopping and running errands, this neighborhood has it covered. Running along opposite ends of town are two fairly busy commercial strips: Kingsbridge Road and Fordham Road. Both thoroughfares have just about every shop and restaurant you could need, but for a real night on the town, a trip into Manhattan might be in order. Either way, the train ride to Midtown is only about 40 minutes long, and just a quick walk from most Fordham Manor apartments.
