Move into a NY apartment in Brooklyn's Carroll Gardens, and you've got the best of every world.

Like much of this part of Brooklyn of the past two decades, this charming neighborhood has seen an influx of families and young professionals, and all of the restaurants, bars and services that follow. Even with the small changes, Carroll Gardens has also maintained its essential character of a middle class community.

Many Carroll Gardens apartments are on the several tree-lined blocks of well-maintained brownstones. In the Carroll Gardens Historic District, these beautiful old buildings are set back from the sidewalk by some 35 feet, creating space for large front gardens, as well as outdoor space in the back. In other words, it's lovely in Carroll Gardens: friendly, relatively quiet, safe, and pretty. And Lower Manhattan is only a few subway stops away.

Carroll Gardens: Easy Subway Access to Manhattan

Carroll Gardens is located in northwest Brooklyn, bordered on the north by Degraw Street (and Cobble Hill), to the south and west by the BQE (and Red Hook), and to the east by Smith Street or Bond Street (and Gowanus). The F train makes a couple of stops in the heart of Carroll Gardens, and continues on up into Dowtown and Midtown Manhattan, making for an easy commute.

At the center of the neighborhood is Carroll Park, Brooklyn's third-oldest park, one square block in size, complete with playground areas, shady walkways with benches and, with a nod to the community's heritage, several bocce ball courts. Carroll Gardens is named after the only Roman Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Revolutionary War hero Charles Carroll. 

Eateries Around Carroll Gardens

In addition to the garden-fronted brownstones in the historic district, today's Carroll Gardens is perhaps most known for its restaurants, filled nightly with both locals and food-lovers from all over town. Among the many high-quality, reasonably-priced restaurants: the great Frankie's 457 Spuntino, which serves excellent pasta... and excellent everything else, too; Buttermilk Channel, with its menu filled with comfort food, cooked with care (save room for the Pecan Pie Sundae); Prime Meats, where the salads are actually as good as the (German-influenced) carnivoric treats; the beloved (and with good reason) South Brooklyn Pizza; and the Latin favorite Cubana Cafe.
