There are still reasonably-priced NY apartments, as well as houses--yes, houses--for sale, in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Ditmas Park. Over the past couple of decades or so, the community has gone from hidden gem to definitely discovered.

Located in the west Flatbush section of Brooklyn, most of Ditmas Park is an officially designated Historic District, and the whole area was farmland into the late 1800s.  The buildings that followed--large, free-standing Victorian homes--are pretty unique in New York City, to say the least.

Ditmas Park is bounded, roughly, to the west by Coney Island Avenue, to the north by Beverly Road, to the east by Ocean Avenue, and to the south by Newkirk Avenue.

Ditmas Park: Your Own Little Piece of Surburbia

There is a distinct, non-urban feel to Ditmas Park, brought about by the unattached houses, and the community's strong public schools.  Crime rates are consistently low, and getting lower. Commuters of Ditmas Park apartments can take the Q express train into Manhattan from one of the neighborhood's two stations. The trip to Union Square on the Q train takes about 20 minutes.

There is much neighborhood boosterism here, with the frequently updated, always informative Ditmas Park Blog only the most recent manifestation of local civic pride and activism. In fact, the Ditmas Park Association, active since 1908, continues to host social events, and puts out a regular newsletter.

Aesthetics & Leisure of Ditmas Park

The lovely, historic Victorian homes often stand on surprisingly large lots. Ditmas Park residents looking for wide open spaces for fun and relaxation don't have far to go, as nearby Prospect Park is one the great treasures of New York City, with its playing fields, sunny lawns, and biking paths.

The recent influx of young families, artists and professionals to Ditmas Park, has been complemented by a sizable number of new cafes, coffee shops, bars and restaurants, especially along Cortelyou Avenue (home to a great little greenmarket). These Ditmas Park establishments have helped turn what was once a fairly desolate dining area, into what Time Out New York has recently called one of the best NYC neighborhoods for food.
