East Williamsburg Apartments in Brooklyn

    East Williamsburg Apartments

It wasn't until the 1990s that NY apartments in this Brooklyn neighborhood began to gain popularity. Since this time, the Williamsburg community has taken on a character of its own, and residents (and realtors) began calling the area East Williamsburg.

The boundaries of East Williamsburg apartments are a little unclear, but the neighborhood consists approximately of the East Williamsburg In-Place Industrial Park (EWIPIP), bounded by to west by Northside and Southside Williamsburg to the west, to the north by Greenpoint, to the south by Bushwick, and to the east by both Maspeth and Ridgewood in Queens.

    East Williamsburg: An Artist's Haven

The housing in East Williamsburg is dominated by row houses and mid-rise apartment buildings, as well as several public housing projects, most notably the Williamsburg Houses, the Borinquen Plaza Houses, and the Cooper Park Houses. But because much of the neighborhood is zoned for light industry, warehouses and factories producing everything from concrete to wontons remain a huge presence here, especially in the EWIPIP.

And with many of these industrial buildings empty these days, East Williamsburg apartments have become something of an artist's haven, as creative types lease these huge old open interiors to create installations and large-scale sculptures. Collectives such as 3rd Ward, Chez Bushwick, and House of Yes offer cheap studio and rehearsal space, and galleries have popped up all over the place in recent years, including Ad Hoc Art, Asterisk, Grace Space, and The NURTUREart gallery.

The neighborhood is also home to several authentic, inexpensive Mexican and Central American food at places such as Bahia, Barzola, and Mesa Coyoacan.
