Sea Gate is a gated community located on the western end of Brooklyn's Coney Island. But despite its location, this neighborhood has little to do with the rides and boardwalk the island is most known for.

Rather, most Sea Gate apartments will be found as part of a duplex or possibly a house rental, although apartment buildings aren't completely out of the question. Residents of this oceanside community take pride in their neighborhood, and often refer to the exclusive enclave as "in the gate".

The neighborhood is shaped like a half-oval, and is one of the few areas of New York to still be surrounded by waterfront. But these aren't your average NY apartments, and homeowners fees give this community a slightly different feel than typical suburbia.

Also unique is the oceanside atmosphere evoked by the various home styles. For instance, many Sea Gate homes display beautiful Mediterranean architecture, and some are quite large and offer unobstructive water views of the Gravesend Bay, the Narrows, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Seaside Life in Sea Gate

Before this community was given gated security, it was known as Norton's Point, which was famous as being the location of a casino before the village transformed into its current residential state. Evidence of this area's history can still be found in the middle of Sea Gate's western waterfront, where a nineteenth century lighthouse still stands.

Sea Gate is protected by two guarded entrances to the east, along the town's border of West 37th Street. Here, two local buses can take residents to other parts of the borough while two express buses take commuters into Manhattan. The x28 and x38 express buses pick up passengers along Sea Gate's eastern end, and take them into Midtown (transfer-free) in just over an hour. 

Newcomers should take note that Sea Gate's restricted access comes with only a few options for public transportation, none of which enters the gates. The closest subway station is Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue Station, which services the D, F, N & Q trains, and is only a short bus ride from the gates. Sea Gate is a 100% residential district, and maintains its quiet atmosphere with zero commercial stores, malls, or thoroughfares. Several families reside in Sea Gate generation after generation--a tell-tale sign of a great neighborhood.
