Unsurprising for an official Historic District, the Carnegie Hill neighborhood is filled with active, vigilant community-based organizations that not only make it their mission to protect the past, but also to maintain and beautify the neighborhood for the present and the future. The spectacular plantings on the Park Avenue malls every year (thousands of tulips on the Park Avenue median), and the landscaping of the greenery are paid for by the buildings, not the city.

Life in Carnegie Hill

There are an extraordinary number of cultural and leisure resources here for those who are lucky enough to find those perfect, charming Carnegie Hill apartments. In addition to the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, Carnegie Hill includes a sizable chunk of New York City's Museum Mile, including Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic building for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; the Neue Galerie, with its peerless collection of 20^th-century German and Austrian art; and the Jewish Museum, housed in the grand old Warburg family mansion.

Just to the south is the incomparable Metropolitan Museum of Art, and to the north lies one of Central Park's hidden gems, the beautiful Conservatory Garden. Central Park itself, of course, is one of Carnegie Hill's great attractions, with its wide-open playing fields at the North Lawn. The Park's aptly-named Great Lawn offers visitors its sunny grassy areas for picnicking and relaxing, its shady benches and pathways for leisurely strolls. The nearby Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir within Central Park is surrounded by one of Manhattan's best—and loveliest--jogging tracks (frequented by Carnegie Hill residents).

Carnegie Hill also has some terrific local shopping along Madison Avenue,  and is home to a number of solid neighborhood restaurants, including the excellent (and extremely popular) Italian spot Sfoglia, the comfort-food classic Sarabeth's Kitchen, and the Parlor Steakhouse.
