If you're searching for conveniently located NY apartments, the neighborhood of Kips Bay could be right for you. This region of Manhattan is generally considered to be bordered by Lexington Avenue and the East River, running west to east, and from 23rd Street to 34th Street going south to north.

Kips Bay is predominantly populated by those who work or go to school along First Avenue's "Hospital Alley". Many residents, however, look for Kips Bay apartments simply because of the neighborhood's walking-distance proximity to the corporate towers of Midtown East. 

That's not to say there aren't any local pleasures to be had in the Kips Bay neighboorhood, but residents seeking culture or interesting shopping or first-rate dining and nightlife tend to travel to very-nearby Gramercy, the East Village, the Flatiron District, Nolita, Soho, or the Lower East Side for their entertainment.

History Behind Kips Bay

Kips Bay was once an actual bay, and is named after an actual Kip. All of this area (and then some) once belonged to Dutch settler Jacobus Henderson Kip, whose farm ran alongside a bay in the river, and whose brick and stone home presided over what is now Second Avenue and 35th Street from 1655 until 1851, when it was the last remaining farmhouse on the island. The bay, too, is long gone, becoming reclaimed land during the great reworking of the Manhattan waterfront in the 1800s. 

Today, several available Kips Bay apartments lie in a mixture of quiet, leafy streets lined with walk-ups and brownstones. The neighborhood's bustling avenues are dominated by contemporary high rises and institutional buildings. Hopsital Row on First Avenue, in particular, holds the NYU School of Medicine, the NYU College of Dentistry, Bellevue Hospital and the Manhattan VA Hospital all right in a row.

A few local spots in Kips Bay include Kips Bay Plaza, which provides a nice, uncrowded first-run multiplex movie theater right down the block. And I.M. Pei's massive residential complex Kips Bay Towers provides residents with some green space, while the waterfront promenade is ideal for runners, and nearby Stuyvesant Cove gives the community light and air.
