Morningside Heights: Much More Than a "College Town"

In addition to the schools of Columbia University—Columbia, Barnard, and Teachers Colleges, among others-- the Morningside Heights neighborhood is also home to several other renowned New York City institutions and landmarks, including the beautiful and imposing Riverside Church, the Bank Street College of Education, the Manhattan School of Music, Grant's Tomb, the Union Theological Seminary and the Jewish Theological Seminary, and the world's largest gothic cathedral in the world (and fourth-largest Christian church), the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, which has been in a continual state of construction from 1892 until the present day (hence its nickname, St. John the Unfinished).

Classic Eateries Surround Morningside Heights

Given the large proportion of students and young academic types renting Morningside Heights apartments, there is, unsurprisingly, lots of good, cheap restaurants and nightlife options to be found in the area. For excellent, ingredient-driven food (and one of the best brunches in all of New York City), there's Community Food and Juice.

Notorious Morningside Heights establishments include The West End, where Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouc drank and philosophied as Columbia undergraduates, which is now Havana Central at the West End and serves credible Cuba dishes. Rack and Soul has perhaps the best fried chicken in town (also: great ribs), while nearby Max Soha serves great inexpensive Italian, and V&T packs them in its first-rate pizza pies. The restaurant Symposium has been around forever, popular for both it's classic Greek specialties and throw-back, hippie-ish décor. Then, there's Tom's Diner, made famous first by Suzanne Vega's song, and later as Seinfeld and crew's hang out.
