Howard Beach and Old Howard Beach are adjacent neighborhoods with fairly similar atmospheres. Both are located in Southern Queens on the northern edge of Jamaica Bay and are quite suburban in nature.

This area of Queens has quite the selection of single family homes, lining wide streets with individual homes, lawns, and driveways. Although you won't find the typical NY apartment in this region, there are Old Howard Beach Apartments out there, just a bit scattered.

Life Near The Bay In Old Howard Beach

Factors separating Old Howard Beach from plain Howard Beach is mainly geography. Shellbank Basin is a narrow channel splitting the two neighborhoods down the middle--seemingly, one of the region's only distinguishing marker. However, Old Howard Beach is named so for a reason, as it was the location of the area's first housing development. Several homes that line the Shellbank Basin have their own dock extending into the water. This neighborhood, among others nearby, only slightly shows off its seaside demeanor, mostly maintaining its suburban atmosphere.

In all, there is little retail in Old Howard Beach itself. Rather, most shopping is done on the opposite side of the Basin in Howard Beach. Cross Bay Boulevard provides residents with quite the selection of pizza parlors and Italian restaurants, many specializing in fresh, seafood dishes. Considering its proximity to Jamaica Bay, there are only a few beaches and greenspace to stretch out. Rather, opposite the Bay are the Rockaways, with the Crossbay Boulevard providing easy access to residents of Old Howard Beach apartments.

Given this neighborhood's distance from Manhattan, it is only a little more accessible than other regions of Queens. For drivers, the Belt Parkway brushes across the northern end of town, providing quick access to the city's highways. For those who prefer public transit, the only nearby subway station is the Howard Beach-JFK Airport Station, which serves the area with the A Train, for just under an hour trip into Manhattan.
