In 1893, Charles Frohman built the Empire Theatre at 41st Street and Broadway. This catalyzed the development of the area and two developers, Alexander Moore and William Rankin, took the initiative to build. By 1894, they had finished a new, residential hotel that could house both tourists and long term occupants.

Featuring gorgeous Renaissance, Gothic and Romanesque designs, it comprised over 13 stories of architectural brilliance. Standing at 123 West 44th Street, this complex served the wealthy and well-dressed. The 363 bedroom community served as the epitome of luxury for a time. Around 1916, this reputation started to change. A fire at the Hotel Gerard sent residents fleeing to the sidewalk outside.  Then, by the 1920s, guests were regularly arrested for theft, bank robbing and other criminal acts.

The renaissance of Times Square turned the reputation of the Gerard around. By 2007, the building was completely renovated by Korman Communities. Today, the elegant façade hides the storied history of the Gerard. Created in 1894, this building has lived a full life and due to its renovations will continue to serve as a host to area residents in the future. Curving bays and extraordinary gables make this one-of-a-kind complex into a mix between the past and the present.
