Top 10 Choices for a Rental Apartment with Pool in NYC
In a city where space is always at a premium, devoting precious square footage in a NYC apartment to a swimming pool, indoor or out, is a wonderfully indulgent luxury.
Of course, not all NYC rental building swimming pools are created equal, ranging from two-lane (short) lap pools to expansive, community-centric pools designed for both fitness and fun. So: an Urban Edge list, of the Top 10 Choices for a Rental Apartment with Pool in NYC. Which is not to say that there aren't other great buildings with great pools in town... it's just that, for one reason or another, these swimming pools are particularly awesome.
West End Towers
Everything about this Upper West Side luxury rental building is big, its dual towers housing 1,000 units, and there's a private, one-acre park at its base, and also an oversized children's playroom managed by Appleseeds, and a long, four-lane pool in its hugely popular fitness center. West End Towers is located at 60th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.
We admit we have a bit of a soft spot for this exceptionally elegant (as only pre-war architecture and design can be) block-long complex in the heart of Chelsea, 14 interconnected buildings in all containing some 1,600 units, and thought to be the largest apartment building on the planet when it was completed in 1931. The swimming pool at London Terrace, though not terribly big, is everything you'd expect in such a grand old building, with those arched leaded windows and iron-railed balconies calling to mind another time. On 23rd Street, and 24th Street, between Ninth and Tenth Avenues.
This multi-building complex overlooking the East River boasts a wonderful community feel, lovely views, a safe, quiet environment, and a terrific (heated) swimming pool in the on-site Swim and Health Club, which not only offers lap-swimmers ample space for a great workout, it also provides Waterside Plaza residents with swim classes for kids, scuba certification, a youth swim team, and extensive periods of "free swim". All under a huge skylight. At 26th Street, across the East River Drive.
One River Place
Another huge apartment complex (hey, you need ROOM to sport a big pool in this town), this spanking-new development is anchored by a soaring, 41-story tower overlooking the Hudson River in Midtown Manhattan. Among the many exceptional amenities enjoyed by One River Place residents: a 35,000 square-feet health club (all super state-of-the-art, of course), featuring a 25-yard-long, glass enclosed, NYC swimming pool. On 42nd Street and 11th Avenue.
New York by Gehry
New York City's tallest residential building, designed by supreme starchitect Frank Gehry, is going to get the nod on just about any luxury-based list, and this is no exception. The swimming pool at New York by Gehry may not be the biggest in town (though at fifty feet long and two lanes wide, it's no slouch in that department, either), but with the lovely skylight and fully retractable glass doors leading out onto the deck, it just may be prettiest. On Spruce Street, in Manhattan's Financial District.
Marbella Jersey City
The luxury rental tower Marbella in Jersey City offers residents a host of enviable amenities, including such community-friendly spaces as a library, billiards room and screening room, not to mention spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline just across the Hudson River. But it's the enormous OUTDOOR pool that really got our attention here, perfect for lounging and sunning and swimming and playing a pretending you live in a resort. On Washington Street.
On Manhattan's Upper East Side, overlooking the East River, the luxury rental building The Stratford treats its residents right, with all of the expected amenities plus saunas and maid service, PLUS its own "beach house: in the form of a pair of outdoor, rooftop pools--one kiddie pool, one regular pool--with stunning views all around. On York Avenue and 74th Street.
The Vanguard at the Shipyard
There are definitely disadvantages to having an outdoor swimming pool with your NYC rental apartment (the whole seasonal thing), but the advantages (sun! pool party!) makes the wait during the winter seem all worthwhile. The Vanguard at the Shipyard in Hoboken, located right on the promenade, offers its residents a lovely little pool out there on the roof deck, with spectacular views of downtown Manhattan. And plenty of sun. On Hudson Street.
The swimming pool itself at the great BKLYN Gold may not being anything super special, as it's basically, it's a two-lane lap-swimming number good for fitness only. But there are so many other things to recommend about this newly constructed luxury rental tower in Downtown Brooklyn that the swimming pool is just the icing on the (very delicious) cake. On Gold Street.
Avalon Riverview North
One more outdoor swimming pool in a NYC rental building worth mentioning: Long Island City's well-appointed Avalon Riverview North. Located, as the name suggests, right on the East River with beautiful views of Manhattan (only ten minutes away via the 7 train, too!), the swimming pool at this luxury rental building looks out over the water, and is as popular with residents as you would expect. On 48th Avenue.
